Harrison Taylor

Harrison Taylor was born on his due date, Thursday, March 25th at 3:42 p.m., weighing 7 pounds, 5 ounces and 20 inches long. Your Yoga class Tuesday evening must have helped me get primed and ready because I started early labor on Wednesday morning the 24th, and by 10 p.m. after the best dinner ever at Edo Squid, there was no turning back. I keep saying at that time I realized “OK, game on!” My doula, Nancy, came over to the house at 2 a.m. and worked with Steve and me on the various comfort measures we learned through the childbirth education classes we took through OmMama!

At around 6 a.m., when my contractions were about 2-3 minutes apart and lasting about a minute long we decided to head to MCV, just in time for the shift change and my acupuncturist, Keith, to get Starbucks coffee and join us. 😉

The staff and in particular my nurse Patty from MCV were all fabulous. They fully respected my desire for a natural childbirth and followed my birth plan like a script. I was allowed to wear my own clothes (my husband’s Brooks Brothers pajamas), drink water throughout my entire labor, utilize the tub and shower, birthing ball, and of course work with my acupuncturist to assist with pain management. There was very little intervention throughout the labor process and the nurse only periodically checked in on the fetal heart rate, which at all times was strong and resilient during and after the contractions.

After 17 hours of active labor, I delivered Harrison within 4 or 5 pushes in the kneeling/squatting position with the assistance of the birthing bar, to the doctor. Actually, the doctor showed up just in time to catch Harrison. Not even enough time for a lab coat! Harrison never left our side during our entire stay at the hospital as the staff honored our request to have all procedures preformed with parents present. He roomed in with us and for my push present, Steve upgraded us to the Gumenick Suites for recovery! What a great experience with MCV!

Overall, my birth experience was much harder and took much longer then I was expecting but I couldn’t have asked for a better team of people to work with and don’t think I could have been more prepared for the delivery of our son. Your Conscious Birthing class and Expecting the Best with Mary proved to be invaluable to us. Steve and I had the most amazing bonding experience during Harrison’s birth and our son was born completely active and aware latching on to breastfeed within minutes of his delivery. What an incredibly powerful experience for all of us. Attached are some of my favorite pictures!

Thank you again for all your help preparing us for the precious time in our lives!

Thanks so much! ~ Julie S
